Barbecue Your Breakfast!: Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association Suggests Five Reasons to Start Your Day Cooking in Your Backyard

Arlington, Va. –  Barbecuing is not just for dinner anymore; in the last year, 11% of grill or smoker owners cooked breakfast outside.* Consider creating a new family tradition this summer: start the day with breakfast on the barbecue.

“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and the one that is most often overlooked in this hectic world.” said Jack Goldman, president and CEO, Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association (HPBA). “Weekends are the perfect time to slow things down, fire up the grill, and enjoy some much needed family time around an open flame. Those who try it will immediately discover that barbecuing your breakfast can be just as enjoyable – and delicious – as your evening meals.”

This summer, HPBA is encouraging grill and smoker owners to #BarbecueBreakfast at least one weekend morning each month. To help people think outside the cereal box, HPBA offers five reasons to barbecue your breakfast:

1. It adds flavor to your favorite breakfast foods. Love bacon and sausage? There’s no better method to enhance your food and add smoky flavor than cooking over your charcoal, gas, or wood pellet. Want to create the perfect pancake? Upgrade to a high quality grill and add a few apple or cherry flavored chips to your flame to improve the taste and texture.

2. Anything you can cook in your indoor kitchen can be cooked on your grill or smoker. While the coffee is brewing in a percolator on the side burner, let the grill cook up everyday basics like toast, pastries, scrambled eggs, French toast, oatmeal, bagels, burritos, and ham, egg, and cheese sandwiches. Cereal is no exception: Warm up granola with a little butter in a pan to toss into yogurt or milk.

3. Have a brilliant brunch by cooking low and slow. Beyond making a quick-turn breakfast over a hot flame, consider slipping out of bed earlier than usual to barbecue a low and slow feast your family can enjoy as a brunch. Brisket for brunch, anyone?

4. Go adventurous. Just as you use your Saturday evenings for exploring and testing new culinary items over your grill, be just as experimental early Sunday mornings – creating new twists on everyday breakfast foods. Think French toast kebabs, scrambled egg pizzas, hash brown tacos and Dutch pancakes. Remember, investing in a quality grill will provide more opportunities for experimenting with new tools and techniques that will enhance the flavor of your food.

5. Create a new family – or neighborhood – tradition. Summer is filled with plenty of opportunities for new traditions. Consider an annual Father’s Day breakfast, a July 4 patio brunch, or a Labor Day neighborhood breakfast block party in your backyard. Having an annual breakfast on the grill or smoker will not only fuel the day, but create memories to last a lifetime.
