How to Select a Fireplace, Stove, or Heater Installer

Hiring a certified professional is the only avenue to ensure that all aspects of your fireplace, stove, or heater installation go smoothly. The needed airflow of the chimney and required protection from combustible objects will drive many important decisions when determining proper appliance placement.  Refrain from attempting to do the installation yourself or letting the lowest bid drive who you hire.

Finding a Knowledgeable Professional

The National Fireplace Institute (NFI) is the best place to find a complete list of professionals that have passed a rigorous exam for installing fireplaces, stoves, and heaters. NFI is the independent, non-profit certification agency that conducts nationwide technical knowledge and skills testing nationwide.

Identifying Needed Certifications

Knowing what fuel you’d like your appliance to use is a good first step. There are certifications specifically for gas, pellet, and wood appliances. However, if you’re still exploring fuel options, seek out someone certified as a Hearth Design Specialist. Looking for someone with multiple NFI Certifications is also recommended. Certifications are valid for 3 years.  Certified NFI specialists have a dated certificate, wallet ID card, or badge on the NFI App.

Connecting With the Professional
