First Ever “Back to Barbecue Day” Creates National Call to Shop and Sizzle

Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association’s National Barbecue Month Promotion Builds Foundation for Retail Holiday

Arlington, VA (March 12, 2020) – Flames on! This May, the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association (HPBA) will rally grill manufacturers, retailers, enthusiasts and curious consumers with its first ever “Back to Barbecue Day.”

HPBA’s 2020 National Barbecue Month social and media promotion will also serve as a foundation for a future industry-wide retail holiday. This year’s Back to Barbecue Day will be Saturday, May 23.

“Over the past 20 years, we’ve seen promotions for Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday grow to become, not only major retail events, but grand scale cultural moments on our calendar,” said Jack Goldman, president and CEO of HPBA. “There’s no reason our industry can’t claim one of the busiest barbecue retail and home cooking days as our own holiday.”

“While we always encourage year-round grilling, there’s no denying that, in the days before Memorial Day, most retailers’ floors are filled with potential customers, and many barbecue owners are tuning up their grills for the summer,” Goldman added. “We seek to embrace this moment by creating even more excitement and awareness of this special time in our year.”

In the first year of the promotion, HPBA will devote National Barbecue Month to talking to media and social media to encourage consumers to visit their nearest specialty retailers on Back to Barbecue Day, offering helpful tips for questions to ask their retailers as well as ideal accessories to consider. HPBA also will provide tips and inspiration for owners getting their grill ready for the season.

As part of the social media campaign, several HPBA members will offer prize packs to individuals who engage in the campaign on Facebook and Instagram. In addition, HPBA will provide its members official Back to Barbecue Day graphics and content, encouraging them to generate interest and excitement for their store or products.

“We consider 2020 a pilot year for Back to Barbecue Day, and our hope is that the program will evolve into a perennial retail holiday for our members and a day of celebration for grillers of all kinds,” Goldman concluded. “We are excited to launch this year’s campaign as we all make plans to get back to the barbecue.”
