Education Foundation

The Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Education Foundation (HPBEF) is the educational arm of the HPBA. Previously known as the HEARTH Education Foundation, HPBEF supports the industries by providing solid business strategies, technical training, and educational products. As with most industries, businesses naturally turn to their trade association for education and training to help them learn proven and possible strategies for success and to instill industry professionalism.

HPBEF provides or facilitates training at:        

  • The annual HPBExpo – professional speakers and industry experts cover topics on every aspect of the industries, from learning state-of-the-art hearth installation procedures to purchasing new product lines, to strengthening a business. Visit to learn more
  • The HPBA Affiliate Annual Meetings – HPBEF works with these regional groups to help provide you with a strong program of education sessions
  • The Distributor and Manufacturer Dealer Training – distributors and manufacturers incorporate HPBEF programs into their dealer training

National Fireplace Institute

The National Fireplace Institute® (NFI) is the professional certification division of the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Education Foundation (HPBEF).  

NFI's objective is to increase public safety by establishing meaningful credentials for professionals involved in planning and installing residential hearth appliances and venting systems. NFI is the result of the industry's shared commitment to promote excellence in the performance of hearth products and systems through voluntary technical credentialing.

NFI certifies planners in three hearth product categories based on fuel type:

  • NFI Gas Specialist
  • NFI Woodburning Specialist
  • NFI Pellet Specialist

The NFI program is recognized as the industry’s standard of professional excellence.
