Standards & Test Methods -- ASTM E06.54 Sub-Committee

  • ASTM E1509: Standard Specification for Room Heaters, Pellet Fuel Burning Type

This is the standard that was developed through ASTM for pellet stoves and has defined this product for use in codes and standards.

  • ASTM E1602: Standard Guide for Construction of Solid Fuel Burning Masonry Heaters

This standard defines masonry heaters and their construction.

  • ASTM E2515: Standard Test Method for Determination of Particulate Matter Emissions Collected by a Dilution Tunnel

This test method was first developed by the Low Mass Fireplace Task Group (E.06.54.06). It was the basis for the Low Mass Fireplace Voluntary Program with EPA. Masonry fireplaces were added-- through an annex to the test method-- and now EPA has decided to add them to the Voluntary Program as well, so it is becoming the EPA's Voluntary Fireplace Program.

  • ASTM E2618: Standard Test Method for Measurement of Particulate Emissions and Heating Efficiency of Outdoor Solid Fuel-Fired Hydronic Heating Appliances

This was the test method developed for outdoor cord wood fired hydronic heaters. This was developed as the first solid fuel voluntary program with EPA. It has now incorporated pellet fired products, storage-type units and indoor units, so it is a much borader test method than was first developed. There is not any current work being done by this task group.

Ongoing Standards & Test Method Work -- Sub-Committee Task Groups

  • E.06.54.01 Thermal & Emission Performance of Solid Fuel Fired Appliances

The Wood Heaters Working Group will propose a new ASTM test method that will replace EPA Method 28. This group is looking at a number of improvements and clarifications that have been noted after 20 years of use of the EPA Method. Additionof an optional cord wood fueling protocol is be considered to provide a standardized procedure for those that want to test with cord wood. The standard fuel will remain as Douglas fir cribs. Efficiency testing will also be addressed by the working group. This may be by reference to CSA B415 of fully specified as a section of the new test method. The task group is meeting monthly via teleconference.

The Pellet Heaters Working Group will propose a new ASTM test method that will replace Section 16 in EPA Method 28. Fuel types other than wood pellets will be addressed in the new test method. Efficiency testing will also be addressed by the working group. This may be by reference to CSA B415 or the method fully specified as a section of the new test method. The task group is meeting monthly via teleconference.

The Efficiency Working Group has been dissolved and responsibilities transferred to the other two working groups.

  •          E.06.54.02: Safety Practices and Procedures
  •     E.06.54.03: Masonry Chimneys
  •     E.06.54.04: Pellet Burning Appliances
  •     E.06.54.05: Fueling Protocol for Masonry Heaters

This subcommittee is finalizing a fueling protocol for testing masonry heaters for efficiency and emissions. This is especially important given the possibility of being regulated under the NSPS revision.

  •     E.06.54.06: Low Mass Fireplace Task Group

Revisions and addition of masonry fireplace annex have been through balloting and the updated test method should be available by September 2009.

  •          E.06.54.07: Masonry Fireplace performance
  •          E.06.54.08: Hydronic Heaters
  •          E.06.54.09: Particulate Measurement Task Group (E2515)

ASTM E2515-09 should be available by June 30, 2009.
